Safety Tips For Pet Workers

When accepting pet jobs with strangers (whether pet sitting, dog walking, or boarding) there are several key things you should know to stay safe, professional, and provide good care.

1. Verify the Client

  • Ask for references from previous pet sitters or neighbors.
  • Check online reviews if the client has any available.
  • Trust your instincts—if something feels off, consider declining.

2. Meet Before Accepting the Job

  • Schedule a meet-and-greet with the pet and the owner.
  • Observe the pet’s behavior, temperament, and health.
  • Make sure you feel comfortable in the home environment.

3. Confirm Job Details

  • Understand the type of pets, number of animals, and their specific needs.
  • Get details about feeding schedules, exercise, medication, and routines.
  • Clarify duration of care, hours, and any overnight stays.

4. Discuss Compensation Clearly

  • Agree on rates, payment method, and extra fees upfront.
  • Include charges for overtime, travel, or administering medications if applicable.

5. Safety Precautions

  • Ask about the home setup (fencing, gates, escape risks).
  • Know where medications, emergency contacts, and first aid kits are.
  • Keep your phone charged and accessible in case of emergencies.

6. Emergency Plans

  • Know the location and contact information of the nearest vet.
  • Clarify what to do in case of illness, injury, or behavioral emergencies.
  • Decide in advance if the pet should be taken to a vet without consulting the owner.

7. Legal & Liability Considerations

  • Some sitters use contracts to outline responsibilities and liabilities.
  • Confirm insurance coverage for accidents or injuries, if possible.
  • Take photos or videos upon arrival and departure for documentation.

8. Communication Expectations

  • Agree on updates: texts, calls, or photos during the job.
  • Discuss frequency and level of detail the owner expects.

9. Observe the Pet’s Health & Behavior

  • Be aware of allergies, aggression, anxiety, or special medical needs.
  • Keep an eye out for changes that may indicate stress or illness.

10. Trust Your Instincts

  • If something feels unsafe or uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to decline the job.
  • Prioritize your safety and the pet’s well-being above all.

Top 10 Tips For Working With Pets

Follow these handy tips when working with pets whether you’re a pet sitter, daycare provider, dog walker, or just caring for a family member's furry friend.

1. Learn About the Species & Breed

Understand the specific needs, behaviors, and temperament of the pet’s species and breed. Different animals have different exercise, diet, and social requirements.

2. Prioritize Safety

Always keep pets in secure environments, use leashes or carriers when needed, and supervise interactions, especially around children or other animals.

3. Establish Routines

Pets thrive on consistency—stick to feeding times, walks, playtime, and bedtime schedules whenever possible.

4. Use Positive Reinforcement

Reward good behavior with treats, praise, or affection rather than punishment. It builds trust and encourages learning.

5. Monitor Health & Behavior

Watch for signs of stress, illness, or injury, and know how to respond quickly. Regular vet check-ups are essential.

6. Communicate Clearly

Understand and respect each pet’s signals—body language, vocalizations, and behaviors indicate their needs or discomfort.

7. Handle Pets Gently

Always approach pets calmly, avoid sudden movements, and handle them appropriately for their size and temperament.

8. Socialize Carefully

Introduce new people or animals gradually. Not all pets are comfortable around strangers or other pets immediately.

9. Keep Supplies Ready

Have food, water, toys, grooming tools, medications, and emergency contacts easily accessible.

10. Educate Yourself Continuously

Stay informed about pet care, behavior training, nutrition, and safety practices to provide the best possible care.
