Top 10 Tips For Hiring A Pet Daycare Provider

Follow these handy tips for hiring a private pet daycare provider so your furry friend gets the best care while you’re away.

1. Check Experience with Your Pet Type

Ask about their background caring for dogs, cats, or other pets. Make sure they understand breed-specific needs, temperaments, and behaviors.

2. Verify Training & Certifications

Look for pet CPR/first aid certification, animal handling training, or professional memberships in pet care associations.

3. Tour the Facility or Home

Visit the daycare space to check for cleanliness, safety measures, secure fencing, and pet-friendly areas.

4. Ask About Daily Routine

Find out what a typical day looks like—exercise, playtime, feeding, rest, and socialization opportunities.

5. Understand Supervision Levels

Confirm how many pets they care for at once and whether constant supervision is provided, especially during group play.

6. Review Health & Safety Policies

Ask about vaccination requirements, flea/tick prevention, emergency plans, and how illnesses or injuries are handled.

7. Check References & Reviews

Speak with past or current clients, and ask for customer reviews to ensure reliability and positive experiences.

8. Clarify Communication

Ask how they’ll keep you updated—daily texts, photos, or reports—so you know your pet is happy and safe.

9. Discuss Rates & Inclusions

Make sure you understand the cost, what’s included (walks, grooming, food), and if there are extra fees for late pickup or special care.

10. Do a Trial Day

Start with a short daycare session to see how your pet adjusts, and gauge the provider’s attentiveness and professionalism.
